Blue Water Satellite is now Satelytics: Same Science, Same Dedication, Renewed Focus
When Blue Water Satellite was founded, it had a singular focus using a technology that had limitless potential. With Satelytics, both the software and the company, is the key to unlocking that potential.
There is a sparkle in Dr. Robert Vincent's eye. He likes to fish. He adores his grandchildren. He loves to laugh. He has a great, internalized need to help humanity. So, one day when Dr. Vincent sat in his office at Bowling Green State University, reminiscing about fishing on Lake Erie and the nasty scum of algae on it, it occurred to him that he could help.
Each and every element on earth has an interesting unique fingerprint. That is, a spectral makeup of light reflectance that identifies it to special scanning equipment. Having been a young scientist assigned to the Landsat project—NASA’s longest continuous space-based record of Earth’s land and inhabitants—Dr. Vincent knew he could use the sensors riding on board Landsat to identify and quantify a variety of environmental factors including water quality and biological constituents.
Through the next few years, Dr. Vincent sought out government support in the form of federal research grants to enable the development of special algorithms to detect that distinct spectral makeup. His work was awarded several U.S. and Canadian patents and the logical next step was to spin off a business. In 2009, Blue Water Satellite was born.
[Our] initial technology was applicable to many other important environmental tasks such as pipeline monitoring, detection of metals and toxins on land and in water, and spotting oil leaks to name just a few.
We set off developing Blue Water Satellite as a lake monitoring business, but it soon became evident that the initial technology was applicable to many other important environmental tasks such as infrastructure monitoring, pipeline monitoring, detection of metals and toxins on land and in water, and spotting oil and other hydrocarbon leaks to name just a few. This technology goes far beyond just protecting our water resources, it's critical to protecting the entire planet. That's why we've chosen to change not only our name, but the entire face of our business.
Our progression into new fields and industries made us step back, look in the mirror, and choose a better future; not only for us, but for the environment, our customers' businesses, our natural resources, and our planet. With this tectonic shift, we've chosen a new monicker to represent us, and that monicker is Satelytics. We recognize the need to put our technology in the hands of those who could make a real difference in their companies and communities, so the Satelytics name is not only the name of our company, it's the name of our product. The two are one and the same. Satelytics is the big data tool that businesses and governments will turn to in the 21st century for near-real-time monitoring and reporting of critical infrastructure, natural resources, and sensitive ecologies.
We hope you'll join us in waving a fond goodbye to Blue Water Satellite, and a celebration as we look forward to our future as Satelytics. Thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way; this moment belongs to you!
