Houston Before and After Harvey: Disaster Preparedness and Recovery using Satelytics

When Hurricane Harvey made landfall in August 2017, it left unprecedented rainfall, flooding, and destruction in its wake over one of America’s most populated cities and most critical energy regions.

Disasters wreak havoc on infrastructure everywhere, and their unforeseen nature makes preparation and recovery much more difficult. With hundreds of miles of pipeline and millions of barrels per day in refining capacity in its path, Harvey’s devastation had effects on energy prices that were felt nationwide.

Satelytics is a specialized cloud-based software platform designed to analyze multi and hyperspectral aerial and satellite imagery that is critical for disaster mitigation and recovery. 

How it Works

Satelytics uses technology based on remote sensing: everything on earth has a unique spectral fingerprint, and these fingerprints can be extracted from multi and hyperspectral satellite imagery.

Imagery is collected over an area of interest and automatically uploaded into the Satelytics cloud software platform where it is analyzed using complex algorithms.

In combination with machine learning and the unlimited computing power of the cloud, Satelytics can process terabytes of satellite imagery to identify oil leaks on land and water, significant changes such as erosion, landslide, and vegetation loss, and damaged or downed structures and equipment.

The results of each analysis are made available via mobile or email alerts, web dashboards, and APIs to connect with other software.

Before and After Harvey

We looked along the right-of-way of a Supermajor-owned pipeline that fell directly within the pathway of devastation left by Hurricane Harvey. Among hundreds of miles of pipeline, Satelytics was able to identify numerous areas where significant water impact had incurred including erosion, standing water, and other potential risks that would undoubtedly require follow up and mitigation.

Leak Detection

While no leaks were detected along the pipeline and area of interest we were monitoring, Satelytics can detect oil and natural gas leaks over both land and water. The unique spectral qualities of oil on water and land, and its effect on surrounding vegetation, allow us to accurately pinpoint small leaks that SCADA systems often miss.
