Methane emissions into the earth's atmosphere are a very big problem. So big, in fact, that nearly every major oil & gas producer has made solid commitments to reduce emissions.

BP (NYSE: BP) has set an aggressive emissions reduction target of 3.5 million tons through 2025. The company has identified a number of smart strategies, such as optimizing process heat, making improvements to tanker engines, reducing and eventually eliminating flaring, redesigning gas recovery mechanisms, and other technology that will help to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG). Read more about BP's commitment here.

In its recent sustainability report, Shell (NYSE: RDS/A) discusses strategies to reduce impact on the environment with a wide range of initiatives such as LDAR (leak detection and repair) programs, which uses infrared cameras to identify and repair leaks. Through several collaborations, Shell will invest $1 billion over 10 years in reduction technologies. Read more about Shell's strategic plan.

Addressing climate change-related issues is a high priority to Conoco Phillips (NYSE: COP). Utilizing new technology, as well as equipment upgrades, they have reduced their emissions by 16 percent in the San Juan Basin alone. Conoco Phillips' Climate Change Action Plan is an impressive and well devised directive to guide the company in managing GHG emissions.

Meeting the Big Goals
To meet the strong methane emission reduction goals that these and other companies have set for themselves, they need to look to all available leading-edge technology for help. Satelytics can detect methane leaks and alert users to areas that need further attention. Satelytics' software, satelytics.io, uses algorithms powered by AI and machine learning that analyze satellite data and extract indicators of a problem — whatever you're looking for — methane leaks, produced water, changes related to right-of-way safety, or constituent pollution. Then the system alerts you via text, email, or both. We will show you critical data —the severity and location of the problem — and then as the manager or first responder you can decide what the next course of action is to minimize consequences.
