Seasons Change, Our Capabilities Do Not

Our leak detection algorithms work in any condition — even snow!

Précis
  • Problem: Leak detection in challenging conditions.
  • Solution: Satelytics' detects leaks, no matter the condition.
  • Benefit: Early detection decreases costs and remediation.

Satelytics’ leak detection algorithms are providing alerts to minimize consequence for our oil & gas and midstream customers in challenging locations. But what about challenging conditions? Our science team built upon our highly accurate hydrocarbon and produced water capabilities to enable detection when snow cover or snowmelt may be present. Satelytics was challenged this past winter in the Bakken region of North Dakota. Below are real examples from our customers.

Satelytics’ algorithms process data in the IR spectra, measuring light reflection on the surface of the earth. Different surface backgrounds require different algorithms to identify the unique wavelengths being emitted by the constituent of interest. The figure below shows the dramatic landscape changes that can occur in a short period in North Dakota. This snow cover is an example of the types of challenges that exist in the real world, that push our scientists to provide leak detection capability for every season!

This produced water leak was detected and confirmed by a Satelytics’ customer, showing performance with a snow background. Of even greater importance, this detection reduced remediation efforts by keeping fluids confined to the well pad.

Satelytics’ algorithms also detect hydrocarbon signatures on winter land surfaces. In situations where snowmelt is encountered, a sheen is recognized when hydrocarbons are spilled.

Another confirmed alert during seasonal change earlier this year shows the ability to distinguish between snowmelt and brine signatures. In this instance, a brine leak occurred and contaminated land outside of the facility grounds. The ability to detect even more diluted brine solutions when mixed with snowmelt shows the robustness of our detection algorithms. Although the leak impacted off-pad soils, the customer stated to Satelytics that the early detection of this leak saved them at a minimum $0.5M because it was a remote site that had little history of operational issues and wasn’t visited regularly. The operator credited Satelytics in finding the spill when reporting to North Dakota regulators.

Satelytics’ algorithms for leak detection analyze every pixel, every time, and have been proven in the field in the toughest of conditions. No matter the season, our capabilities protect your asset areas from loss of product and damage to the environment — both physically and in the court of public opinion. And now all of the capabilities of Satelytics are available anywhere on your mobile device, even without cell coverage, with Satelytics for the the non-connected world!

Our oil & gas and midstream customers use Satelytics as the last line of defense as they bring the energy our country needs to the places it is needed!

Satelytics Inc., www.satelytics.com, is a cloud-based geospatial analytics software suite. Multispectral and hyperspectral imagery is gathered from satellites, UAV, planes, and fixed cameras, and processed to provide both alerts and qualitative results for our customers. Data can be gathered up to a daily basis, and results are sent to customers within hours. This includes the specific problem, location, magnitude, and even qualitative information, which minimizes cost, impact, and operational disruption for our clients.
